Experience a cheaper VR with Qualcomm’s all-in-one headset!
Qualcomm’s Snapdragon VR820 is an untethered high-level VR headset, which basically means that it has all the hardware it needs inside the device itself. There is no need for a smartphone or PC to pair with it. Yup, you heard that right. Our dreams are coming true after all.
The VR820 headset is powered by its own Snapdragon 820 SoC (System on Chip) with an Adreno 530 GPU (Graphics Processing Unit).
Qualcomm partnered with Goertek, a Chinese electronics ODM (Original Design Manufacturer) and developed the Snapdragon VR820. The reference design has a 1440×1440 AMOLED display at 70Hz per eye and a 360-degree 4K playback at 70 frames per second with HEVC (High Efficiency Video Coding).
This VR headset of pure joy also boasts of integrated eye tracking, dual front-facing cameras for six degrees of freedom, four microphones, and gyro, accelerometer, and magnetometer sensors! Just writing about it has accelerated my heart rate.
We are yet to know how long the battery will last, but theVR820 is said to include a battery saver mode.
HOW IT WORKS:
The VR820 is completely wireless, thanks to the Bluetooth 4.2 and Wi-Fi 802.11ac support. Due to this factor, it uses internal processing.
Videos and Movies can be streamed using either the Bluetooth or Wi-Fi.
Compatible games and applications for the VR820 are currently under development.
Popular VR apps: VRSE, Sisters: A VR Ghost Story, Orbulus, Seene, InCell VR.
Popular VR games: Arizona Sunshine, Star Citizen, Eagle Flight, Superhot VR, Elite: Dangerous.
The VR820 is not as powerful as the Oculus Rift or HTC Vive when tethered to a PC and its 70Hz refresh rate is lower than the 90Hz Rift and Vive provide.
The best part is the VR820 is wireless and is said to cost lesser than the other VR headsets in the market!
