Cheat codes in a game
Have you ever thought why cheating and cheat codes have been such a significant part of gaming for all these years?
Game developers today do everything in their control to stop gamers from gaining an unfair advantage in the games they create. Valve’s famous “Anti-Cheat” system finds and removes hackers who ruin everyone’s online game on its Steam platform.
Cheating during a game? Where’s the skill?
The coding and development process, even for the initial games, was a never-ending experiment of testing, tweaking, and reviewing. Keeping this in mind, it’s easy to understand why certain developers would want a way to skip instantly between levels or run a level with an infinite amount of health. Cheat codes allowed developers to test very specific parameters without wasting time.
Most of these cheat codes made it into the final versions of games because they were too much of a headache to remove. Pretty soon several gamers realized they existed, and just how powerful those cheats would be. As the 90’s progressed, it became clear that there were two ways to beat a game: the traditional way and through cheat codes.
As games changed, so did the codes:
The “cheating” industry started to become competitive and even combative for game producers, and it became clear that the cheat codes were compromising the quality of games and their experience. Games themselves were getting lengthier and complicated, and the older generation of cheat-code developers was replaced by younger gamers. These gamers had bigger ideas and who had much less time to waste programming another way around the game. Finally, the software had grown very advanced and using cheat codes while game testing was no longer necessary. The cheat code hype quickly disappeared.
Of course, cheat codes still exist in several games today. Be it for GTA, DOOM, Road Rash, Claw or Mortal Kombat- you can simply Google the cheat codes.
However, the traditional cheat code has been replaced today through the use of Easter eggs, (little secrets for devoted players to find out, often messages directly from developers) things that bring about a new experience, but doesn’t sacrifice gameplay in today’s plot-driven games.
